After being chained in an alley in Harlem for over 6 years he was finally rescued. To watch him run in the yard unchained for the first time in life gave us a glimpse at what pure joy was like. He was ecstatic! If running was joy he discovered that toys were bliss. He has been such a happy, happy guy and we have had the privilege of watching him blossom. <span lang='EN' style='font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN'>
<span lang='EN' style='font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial'> Unfortunately, sometimes we do not always get the happy ending we were hoping for. A few weeks ago we noticed he was losing weight. We upped his food but it did not make a difference. He has been to the vets and has had urine analysis, a fecal, complete blood panel, and xrays and finally last week an ultrasound. The news we received was not what we wanted to hear. His liver is enlarged as well as his spleen, his GI tract is thickening and his lymph nodes in that area are swollen. The doctor suspects cancer...and liver cancer is what she feels he has. We are devastated. To finally be free and to now have to fight another battle that he will ultimately lose is just not fair. In the mean time he is happy and does not know he is sick. He still runs through the yard with a toy in his mouth smiling. All we can do is pray for a miracle or two for him. We still hope there is someone who will adopt him and make him their own and we hope that he will be able to enjoy his new found freedom for a long time to come. <span lang='EN' style='font-family: 'Verdana', 'sans-serif'; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial'> Please consider making a donation towards his care. Shine's Rescue Story: Shine is a 7 year old male dog who had been chanined in an alley of a bodega in NYC for all or most of his life . He had been living there for at least 5 years and was sweet but resigned to a terrible life. The neighbors confirmed he's been there for many years and often barks when the weather is terrible. He's losing his voice because the rain had been often and he doesn't have any shelter from the water coming in from the sidewalk closure. Shine's owner made it very clear he doesn't want him. He had been trying to get rid of him for years, to anybody who asks. I spoke with one of the neighbors who personally knows this dog and he said the dog is sweet and wants to interact. He was living in terrible conditions and now is saved. We all NEED LOVE...and especially Shine who has never known a soft caress under the chin, a belly rub or a soft bed to lie on. Do you think you are the one who can give Shine the love & a safe home that he has never had before? If so, please fill out an adoption application and arrange to meet Shine. Update from his foster June 2012: This happy genleman was recently neutered and is doing well in the house. No accidents and no distructive behavior. We are thinking of changing his name to Smuggler because he will steal all of the toys out of the doggie toy basket and hide them in his crate. He is always smiling and happy and I think he is really enjoying life for the first time. He loves hanging out outside but likes to be with his fostermom too and will knock on the door when he is ready to come in. He LOVES belly rubs and attention and is grateful for the least bit of acknowledgement. He has been reactive with other dogs so he would have to be the only dog. I have walked him in the park with other dogs around and he doe
